Residence in Georgia: how long you can be away
Georgia is popular for its easy residence and long visa-free stay — but a residence permit still expects you to spend real time in the country.
The 183-day rule
A Georgian residence permit — temporary or permanent — may be revoked if you are absent from Georgia for more than 183 days within any 12-month period. The window is rolling, so it is checked continuously, not reset per calendar year.
Because the window rolls, aim to spend at least half of any 12-month stretch in Georgia, not just half of the calendar year. This is general information, not legal advice.
How to keep track
- Count every day outside Georgia within the last 12 months.
- Keep the rolling-year total under 183 days abroad.
- Remember the window moves daily — one long trip can push you over even if previous years looked fine.
Daybound counts your days outside Georgia over the rolling year and warns you before the 183-day limit.
