Residence in Portugal: how long you can be away
A Portuguese residence permit can be cancelled if you spend too long outside the country without an accepted reason. Temporary and permanent permits have different absence limits.
Temporary residence
A temporary residence permit may be cancelled after six consecutive months of absence from Portugal, or after eight cumulative months of absence over the total validity of the permit, unless the absence is justified by an accepted reason.
Permanent residence
A permanent residence permit is more forgiving: it may be cancelled after 24 consecutive months of absence, or after 30 cumulative months of absence within a three-year period, again barring accepted reasons.
Accepted reasons (work, study, family and similar) can excuse some absences. Treat the day limits as the safe line and confirm your case with AIMA — this is general information, not legal advice.
How to keep track
- Watch the single longest stretch abroad against the consecutive limit.
- Add up all your days abroad against the cumulative limit.
- Keep documents for any absence you would justify as an accepted reason.
Daybound counts both your longest continuous absence and your total days outside Portugal, and warns you before either limit.
